ESPN reported that more than 1,000 Division I players had entered the portal less than a day after it opened on April 7.

The rush comes under a new NCAA structure designed to shorten and delay the portal period. CBS Sports reported in January that the NCAA moved the men's basketball portal opening to the day after the NCAA Tournament and cut the entry window to 15 days, from April 7 through April 21.

Even with the shorter window, the pace of player movement appears unlikely to slow. ESPN reported that coaches expect the number of entrants this year to surpass the roughly 2,700 players who entered last season, while CBS Sports' live tracker described the opening day as an immediate surge of departures, commitments and roster uncertainty across major conferences.

The portal now functions as a compressed free-agency market layered directly on top of the college calendar. Players can enter during the two-week window and commit later, leaving coaches to recruit both their own roster and outside talent at the same time. The opening day figures suggest that, even with tighter rules, the transfer market remains one of the dominant forces shaping the sport.
