WASHINGTON ? The Supreme Court appeared open on Monday to allowing the Trump administration to revive the ?metering? policy that restricted how many asylum seekers could be processed at official border crossings each day.

In its report from the arguments, The Associated Press said several conservative justices seemed receptive to the administration's claim that immigration officials should have discretion to limit the number of asylum seekers processed at ports of entry when demand is high.

The case concerns a practice used during both the Obama and Trump years but ended by President Joe Biden in 2021. AP said lower courts had ruled that the policy violated both federal asylum law and constitutional protections by preventing migrants from presenting claims at the border.

The justices are considering the case alongside several other major immigration disputes this term. AP's broader court coverage has described how the court is being asked to weigh executive power over immigration, citizenship and removal policy across multiple fronts.
