WASHINGTON ? Congressional Democrats warned in March that the Trump administration's replacement tariff program could cost the average U.S. household more than $2,500 in 2026, even after the Supreme Court struck down much of the president's earlier tariff agenda.

In its coverage of the estimate, The Associated Press said President Donald Trump was moving quickly to restore tariff revenue through other legal tools, prompting new warnings that import taxes would continue to raise consumer prices during a period of already elevated living costs.

The underlying estimate came from the Joint Economic Committee Democrats, which said families could pay more than $330 billion in tariff costs this year if revenue collections stay near January 2026 levels.

A separate measurement from The Budget Lab at Yale said the 2025 tariffs had already raised nearly $195 billion in inflation-adjusted customs revenue above the 2022-2024 average by January 2026, while pass-through estimates suggested a significant share of those costs was already reaching consumer prices.

The figures do not settle the political fight over tariffs, but they offered a clearer picture of how aggressively the administration is trying to preserve tariff revenue after the legal setback.
