In a report on the sport's overnight pivot, The Associated Press said more than 1,200 players entered the portal shortly after Michigan's win over UConn, underscoring how the modern college calendar now compresses celebration and roster reconstruction into the same night.

That surge was reflected in ESPN's player rankings and portal overview, which reported that more than 1,000 Division I men's players had entered within 10 hours of the portal opening and that coaches expected the total to climb well above previous years.

The compressed window was not accidental. ESPN's January report on the rule change said the NCAA shortened the men's basketball transfer period to 15 days and moved it to begin the day after the national championship game.
