ELMONT, N.Y. ? Alex Ovechkin became the NHL's all-time leading goal scorer on April 6, 2025, passing Wayne Gretzky with the 895th goal of his career in a game against the New York Islanders.

In its report from UBS Arena, The Associated Press said Ovechkin scored the record-breaking goal on a second-period power play against fellow Russian Ilya Sorokin, prompting an on-ice ceremony with Gretzky and NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman.

The record came two days after AP reported that Ovechkin had tied Gretzky's mark of 894 with a two-goal game against Chicago, setting up the final step in one of hockey's most closely watched pursuits.

The league's official account of the moment on NHL.com said Ovechkin scored from the left circle on the power play, the familiar shooting spot that had defined much of his run to the top of the record book.

The goal closed a chase that once looked improbable and moved one of the sport's oldest career records into Ovechkin's hands.
