CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. ? Virginia hired Richmond coach Aaron Roussell as its next women's basketball coach on Tuesday, making a quick turn after the program abruptly dismissed Amaka Agugua-Hamilton just days after a Sweet 16 run.

The hiring was first carried by ESPN's Associated Press report, which said Roussell arrived after seven seasons at Richmond, where he led the Spiders to three consecutive NCAA tournament appearances.

Virginia formally announced the move in a statement carried on the university athletics site, where athletic director Carla Williams called Roussell a proven winner and said the school wanted a new era for the program to begin immediately.

The pace of the move followed a different university statement from April 4, when Virginia announced that Agugua-Hamilton would not return despite Virginia becoming the first First Four team to reach the women's Sweet 16.

With the transfer portal already open, the speed of the hire reflected the pressure on programs to stabilize rosters almost as soon as a coaching vacancy emerges.
